The Polynomial Method in Circuit Complexity Applied to Algorithm Design∗

چکیده
In circuit complexity, the polynomial method is a general approach to proving circuit lower bounds in restricted settings. One shows that functions computed by sufficiently restricted circuits are “correlated” in some way with a low-complexity polynomial, where complexity may be measured by the degree of the polynomial or the number of monomials. Then, results limiting the capabilities of low-complexity polynomials are extended to the restricted circuits. Old theorems proved by this method have recently found interesting applications to the design of algorithms for basic problems in the theory of computing. This paper surveys some of these applications, and gives a few new ones. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

A Unified Approach for Design of Lp Polynomial Algorithms
By summarizing Khachiyan's algorithm and Karmarkar's algorithm forlinear program (LP) a unified methodology for the design of polynomial-time algorithms for LP is presented in this paper. A key concept is the so-called extended binary search (EBS) algorithm introduced by the author. It is used as a unified model to analyze the complexities of the existing modem LP algorithms and possibly, help ...
متن کاملThe Polynomial Method and All-Pairs Shortest Paths
We examine a recent development in circuit complexity used to speed up algorithms with circuit representations, and how it can be applied to the All-Pairs Shortest Path problem specifically. Additionally, we look at a few other problems on which improvements can be made in this manner. We also examine other consequences of possible extensions of this work.
متن کاملA reactive bone route algorithm for solving the traveling salesman problem
The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a well-known optimization problem in graph theory, as well as in operations research that has nowadays received much attention because of its practical applications in industrial and service problems. In this problem, a salesman starts to move from an arbitrary place called depot and after visits all of the nodes, finally comes back to the depot. The obje...
متن کاملA POLYNOMIAL TIME BRANCH AND BOUND ALGORITHM FOR THE SINGLE ITEM ECONOMIC LOT SIZING PROBLEM WITH ALL UNITS DISCOUNT AND RESALE
The purpose of this paper is to present a polynomial time algorithm which determines the lot sizes for purchase component in Material Requirement Planning (MRP) environments with deterministic time-phased demand with zero lead time. In this model, backlog is not permitted, the unit purchasing price is based on the all-units discount system and resale of the excess units is possible at the order...
